The primary derivation of meanings for the Pips comes from a review of the significance
of the suit in question, interfaced with the meaning of the number itself. There is
indeed much to be learned from following the progression of the numbers 1 through 10
within a given suit; for instance, from studying the Ace, then the 2, the 3, etc., of Pentacles
(and then the other three suits), because the Minors represent an evolution of events and
experiential knowledge for the four aspects of the personality.
But of additional and perhaps more significant help in defining the Pips is emphasizing
the study of the numbers vertically. That is to say, to study all the 2s, the 3s, and so on,
emphasizing what the numbers have in common and then allowing for the differences
from suit to suit. This will be our method, as opposed to the usual emphasis on the progression
of 1 to 10 within each suit.
The thorough knowledge of the suits gained from the review of the origin of suit
meanings, such as that presented in Chapter Three, must be integrated with a sound knowledge
of the numbers 1 to 10. 4 A working knowledge of these numbers is presented a little
later in this chapter. The study of Numerology is an important compliment to a serious
study of the Tarot.

with Hands, Instincts, Physical Health, Crafts, Farming, Sustenance, Possessions, Physical
Activity/Achievements, Industry, Hatha Yoga, Physical Handicaps, Physical Prowess, Physics,
Chemistry, Biochemistry, Anthropology, Things Green.
Cups represent: The Emotional, Matters of Water, Relationships, Work with Heart,
Emotional Health, Passion/Compassion, Caring, Creative Expression, Theater, Dance,
Rebirthing, Sentimental Activity, Lower Psychic, Tantra and Bhakti Yoga, Things Blue.
Swords represent: The Mental, Matters of Air, Work with Mind, Mental Health, Communications,
Writing, Mental Activity, Logic, Mathematics, Information, Politics, Mental
Businesses, Professions, Psychology, Philosophy, Government, Civil Service, Raja Yoga,
Things Yellow.
