6 GOVERNED BY THE LOVERS: EMOTIONAL TAPES, BASIS OF RELATING/CREATING
UPRIGHT: You love your physical freedom, and your relationships (be they friend or lover), will
have to give you a wide berth. This is not to say that you cannot be both an excellent friend and a
good lover, but your ground rules will have to be accepted. INVERTED: Being in virtual bondage as
if owned is one far extreme here: it’s opposite is irresponsible, non-committal freedom. Either
present great difficulties.
7 GOVERNED BY THE CHARIOT: PHYSICAL RESOURCES; MEANS TO ACHIEVE
UPRIGHT: You are similar to the cat who can always land on her feet. You are resourceful in the
hardest of circumstances, your instincts for survival are close to those of an animal. Your physical/
material demands are not that great. But like the tortoise and the hare, you (the tortoise) always get
where you want to go, frequently before the other guy. INVERTED: Physical assets may not exist or
be liquid enough if a project is the question. Your needs may outreach your means. Physically, you
may not be up to the task of the moment.
8 GOVERNED BY STRENGTH: EMOTIONAL RESOURCES, ENERGY
UPRIGHT: You are low-keyed and do not waste energy. You are like an engine with a smooth idle.
This controlled temperament enables you to roll with the punches and move on. While you can be
knocked down, you can never be counted out. INVERTED: The extremes of this archetype which
may give you the most trouble are, on the one hand, too low keyed, or too fixed in your ways, letting
opportunities pass. On the other hand, you are unable to rest and regroup, and much too free and
unreliable, chasing opportunities away.
9 GOVERNED BY THE HERMIT: BELIEF SYSTEM; BASIS FOR DECISIONS
UPRIGHT: What you count most important is physical freedom, liberty, and choice. But here
also is the belief in material moderation, placing minimum demands on nature to supply our
needs. An environmentalist, consumer advocate, or political activist fits here. INVERTED: At
one extreme, this is the anarchist, the radical individualist who ideally would place himself in a
cabin in the wilderness. At another extreme, this ideal reduces everyone to a common denominator
resembling the extreme side of socialism/communism. At even another extreme is radical
environmentalism.

UPRIGHT: The lack of movement, of apparent growth at the physical level, be it the progress
of a body-building program, or of increase in finances, is appropriate for the moment. All of
the fives, but especially the Five of Pentacles, tell us that our souls are waiting for things to line
up, to catch up with each other. Gates must be constructed for us to move through. INVERTED:
Improvement, increase in efficiency, progress must come from a shoring up of the existing
situation.
11 GOVERNED BY JUSTICE: STATE/CONTENT OF MIND, PLANS
UPRIGHT: The mind is centered on the interim in your physical world allowing a reprieve. Rest
and relaxation may be on the schedule. You maybe occupied with mental pastimes. INVERTED: On
one extreme, your stasis at the physical level is the number one priority, for the imbalances are
hurting. On the other extreme, your mind is on other matters—neither on the problems at hand, nor
engaged in positive refueling for another day.
12 GOVERNED BY THE HANGED MAN: STATE OF EMOTIONS, SUBCONSCIOUS
UPRIGHT: The heart is helping you find happiness, whatever your circumstances—to enjoy leisure
if that is your good fortune, to be able to find the silver lining in your physical troubles if that is your
present lot. It offers no explanations, no excuses, just love. This is Tiny Tim’s ability to love
Scrooge. INVERTED: On the one hand, this heart is indifferent to the problems of the Physical
Plane. On the other hand, you could be exacerbating the problem with overreaction and misplaced
sentiment.
