4 GOVERNED BY THE EMPEROR: SPIRITUAL GIVENS, LIFE PURPOSE
UPRIGHT: The archetype of success and happiness as the crowning glory of lessons welllearned
in the emotional/creative arena—this is your karmic purpose. Not so much to achieve
it, as to live with it and share its lessons with others in all that you do. It will permeate your
activities. INVERTED: This calls on you to help others achieve this archetype, whether in your
own family or in society at large, while hanging on to the principles of love you have already
digested.
5 GOVERNED BY THE HIEROPHANT: SYSTEMS BORN INTO, SOCIETAL INFLUENCE
UPRIGHT: This was a mansion of love, of caring interdependence and support moving in every
direction and in many layers. If this setting could be given to every child on the front end of life, we
would have gone a long way to solving most of the world’s problems. INVERTED: As with all good
things, they can be good to a fault. Imagine too much family love, caring. It happens, creating
overdependence, and setting up a need to rebel to assert freedom. At the other extreme, there may
have been a potential of this archetype for you, but for some reason it escaped you in particular. For
example, a family that functioned well through three children, then shortly after the fourth came
divorce.
6 GOVERNED BY THE LOVERS: EMOTIONAL TAPES, BASIS FOR RELATING/CREATING
UPRIGHT: With the ideal of love as your main tapes, this will guide you in your passions and in
your creative searches. This is one of the archetypes most advantageous here. Your approach to
matters in this Plane will be well-disposed to balancing personal and universal love, passion, and
compassion. INVERTED: At one extreme, the promise of love as the solution, the panacea of all the
world’s problems is somewhat distorted, most likely over-idealized. Some facet of your emotional
package—your marriage, your family, your creative project—may be seen too much as an end
rather than a means and part of a much larger continuum. In another extreme, the ideal of universal
love and its perfection may be hindering you on the more personal level.
7 GOVERNED BY THE CHARIOT: PHYSICAL RESOURCES, MEANS TO ACHIEVE
UPRIGHT: This is similar to the interpretation that follows for this card in position 8 below, except
that the emotional bonding and love makes material resources available. Most obvious is manpower.
People are there when you need them. INVERTED: You may be too dependent on others, or
they on you, strapping you for resources at this time.
8 GOVERNED BY STRENGTH: EMOTIONAL RESOURCES, ENERGY
UPRIGHT: With the archetype of family love, of universal love for your emotional resources, you
should be a pillar of strength on which many others can depend. For you now, in your turn, can
make available all that has been made available to you. The lessons of give and take here are
perfectly balanced. In the act of giving, you are receiving at the same time, and in the act of receiving,
you are giving at the same time. No debts are incurred. That is emotional/creative efficiency!
INVERTED: Either dependency of you on the family, or the family on you may have left you less
energy than you need.
9 GOVERNED BY THE HERMIT: BELIEF SYSTEM; BASIS FOR DECISIONS
UPRIGHT: “I believe in love; I believe in you.” The words of that song sing your tune, except that
those words “love” and “you” can be very big concepts in your mind. The song, “People” from the
Broadway show “Funny Girl” that helped launch Barbra Streisand’s career also puts your philosophy
in a nutshell. “People who need people are the luckiest people in the world.” INVERTED: As
always, remember that balance is what makes all the archetypes work for you rather than against.
