13 GOVERNED BY DEATH: PHYSICAL SITUATION, HARD REALITY
UPRIGHT: Your present situation is invigorated with healthy ideas, and you may feel literally on top
of the world. You are centered on your personal path to fulfillment of your Karmic Contract. IN-
VERTED: This may feel like someone has turned your world upside down. Some of your old world
may survive this flood, but you should be prepared that some of it will not. What remains is as it should
be and you must begin to rebuild on that. In some cases, this is primarily a matter of scaling back.
14 GOVERNED BY TEMPERANCE: EMOTIONAL TEST
UPRIGHT: The near future is a time for great emotional and creative expansion. Your geographical
playground may actually improve, but even if you stay close to home, your emotional environment
will be huge. The heart is accepting its part of the drive of mind toward universality and resolution
of dualities. The barrier between self and other is coming down in heart as well as mind. IN-
VERTED: With spiritual initiates the tendency can be to attempt working on the whole world rather
than the part of it applicable to your path. You must work on universality by working in your little
corner. You can only improve the world by improving yourself and the extensions of yourself in
your surroundings.
15 GOVERNED BY THE DEVIL: TEMPTATION/CHALLENGE, FEARS
UPRIGHT: You are externalizing, putting more of self into the other. This has you broadening your
scope of interest and involvement. But you are also internalizing, accepting/embracing more of the other
into the self. This is the process wherein the ego transcends self, turning the death of the ego into rebirth.
INVERTED: As the barrier between self and other comes down and the self becomes larger, filled with
the other, it must still deal with the habits of the old ego which will try to see itself as not only larger, but
in its separate state of mind larger and therefore better. This lays the basis for an ego power trip.
16 GOVERNED BY THE TOWER: NEXT LESSON, GRACE OF GOD
UPRIGHT: Look up to see your new world as it descends to become your new reality, transforming
your environment into a perfect fit—a suit of armor in which you can ride forth with confidence to
find your holy grail. INVERTED: With a slight twist on the preceding, here you are part of the
transformation of someone else’s environment, and you will be a strategic part of their new world.

UPRIGHT: Metaphysically, this goal is nothing less than the merging of self in universal mind. In
more esoteric terms, these are worldly goals on a large scale—world peace, environmental harmony,
and the like. This is ambition with a healthy capital A. INVERTED: Distortions of the extremes of this
archetype include a penchant for utopian solutions, an escapement rather than immersion in reality,
anti-environmentalism on the order of “and God gave man dominion over the Earth.”

UPRIGHT: Here is the aspiration to love The World. Metaphysically, this goal is nothing less than
the dedication of heart which is the necessary compliment in the merging of the compassionate self
into universal mind. It contains the heart of universal love, loving all of God’s creation. INVERTED:
At one extreme, the heart can internalize too much, taking too much into itself, of a more consuming
rather than witnessing love. While this may disguise itself as compassion, it may actually be
emotional gout. At the other extreme, the heart can externalize too much, putting itself into the
world and neglecting the home fires.

UPRIGHT: The material world and your physical body have been both temple and laboratory for
you and you richly deserve all that has come your way. INVERTED: When tasting life, remember to
