Blavatsky suggests that each of the epochs is intrinsically linked with the external
senses: 1 = Hearing, 2 = Touch, 3 = Sight, 4 = Taste, 5 = Smell. The sixth epoch, the
Aquarian, will be our Astral/Mental sense; the seventh will be Post-Mental/Spiritual.
We are looking at the developmental evolution of mankind through these seven epochs
for their implications to the evolution of consciousness of man in a single lifetime,
and as such they will impact our definition of the seven Stages for our Karmic Spread.
Blavatsky also says that each of these seven epochs has seven stages. With that in mind,
if we apply the definition of the transpersonal psychologists to these epochs and stages,
here’s what we get for the period of time we are living in now: Blavatsky says that we are in
the third stage of the fifth epoch. In the transpersonal language of Jacquelyn Small, that
means that we are in the “Mental Stage of the Higher Mental Epoch.” This means that our
epoch is operating under the basic Force of the Love of Truth; the basic Quality of Authentic
Expression; the basic Level of Consciousness of Active Intelligence; the basic Urge for
Understanding; the basic Pitfall of Abstraction; and the Mastery of Illumination. And it
means that our specific stage is operating under the basic Force of the Will to Know; the
Quality of Self-Definition; the Level of Consciousness of Analysis/Comparison; the basic
Urge of Identity-Seeking; the Pitfall of Fragmentation; and the Mastery of Right Thought.
It’s interesting to observe that in the Karmic Spread the positions that make up Stage
Five are: Death(13), Temperance(14), The Devil(15), and The Tower(16). We will hold the
analysis of this series of card positions until Chapter Six.
Yogic tradition also tells us “that the Grand Cycle of Man’s life on the Earth is composed
of Seven Cycles, of which we are now living in the third seventh part of the Fifth
Cycle.” 20
