The Board Dissected<br />

The bedrock upon which <strong>electronic</strong> <strong>design</strong>s rest is the printed circuit<br />

board. "The board" has evolved significantly during the past 20 years.<br />

In the early days of <strong>electronic</strong>s, printed circuit boards were predominantly<br />

analog in nature; today, as shown in Figure 4-1, the board<br />

is primarily digital. According to users, the analog component is<br />

expected to continue to shrink—although not dramatically—during the<br />

next five years.<br />
