that an enthusiasm will consist <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> layers around a core. <strong>The</strong> core is made up<br />

<strong>of</strong> two main groups: pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and amateurs” (as cited in Abercrombie & Longhurst,<br />

1998, p. 132). Moorhouse‟s circular model attempts to embolden the various layers <strong>of</strong><br />

public surrounding the central product, while acknowledging the equal positions shared<br />

by pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and amateurs. I therefore similarly adapted his design (see Figure 5) to<br />

examine its potential in serving my own research:<br />

As seen in Figure 4, by incorporating the apparatus into the model, the continuum<br />

possesses a direction that, in relation to fandom, implies consumption and cultivation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> fact that the central product is unobtainable and yet remains the core <strong>of</strong> the model,<br />

shows the cyclical effect <strong>of</strong> production and consumption; the product, like a ripple,<br />

cultivates various levels <strong>of</strong> viewers, who in turn, respond by consuming and petty<br />

producing products <strong>of</strong> their own, all in an effort to obtain the unobtainable.<br />
