3.5.9 The Academic or Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Associations<br />
There are academic associations which directly influence the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> national <strong>edu</strong>cational systems such academic<br />
associations include:<br />
(a) Association <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Lecturers<br />
(b) Association <strong>of</strong> the Polytechnic Lecturers<br />
(c) Association <strong>of</strong> Lecturers in the Colleges <strong>of</strong> Education<br />
(d) Association <strong>of</strong> both Primary and Secondary School Teachers.<br />
In <strong>Nigeria</strong> for instance, we have<br />
(a) Academic Staff Union <strong>of</strong> Universities<br />
(b) Academic Staff Union <strong>of</strong> Polytechnics<br />
(c) Academic Staff Union <strong>of</strong> Colleges <strong>of</strong> Education as well as<br />
(d) <strong>Nigeria</strong>n Union <strong>of</strong> Teachers (NUT).<br />
We also have the association <strong>of</strong> principals <strong>of</strong> Secondary Schools,<br />
the Association <strong>of</strong> Graduate Teachers, the association <strong>of</strong> <strong>National</strong><br />
Certificate <strong>of</strong> Education (N.C.E.) teachers and the association <strong>of</strong> Grade II<br />
teachers all within the <strong>Nigeria</strong> Union <strong>of</strong> Teachers.<br />
In addition, some subjects have an association each, such<br />
associations include:<br />
(a) Science Teachers Association (STAN)<br />
(b) Mathematics Teachers Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nigeria</strong><br />
(c) Social Studies Teachers Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nigeria</strong>.<br />
(d) <strong>Nigeria</strong>n Association for Comparative Education among<br />
others<br />
They assist in the writing <strong>of</strong> textbooks on their subjects. They also<br />
assist in the improvement, seminars, workshops as well as conferences<br />
for the teachers <strong>of</strong> their subjects.<br />
