Unit 2 - The System <strong>of</strong> Education in Brazil<br />
1.0 Introduction<br />
Discussing the system <strong>of</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation in Brazil will enhance the<br />
students' understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation and practices <strong>of</strong> foreign countries.<br />
2.0 Objective<br />
At the end <strong>of</strong> this unit, you should be able to discuss the <strong>edu</strong>cation<br />
practices <strong>of</strong> Brazil.<br />
3.0 Conclusion<br />
The unit above discusses the <strong>edu</strong>cation theory and practice <strong>of</strong><br />
Brazil.<br />
3.2.1 Background<br />
Brazil which is the largest country in the whole <strong>of</strong> South America<br />
was formally a federation <strong>of</strong> states but later divided into many<br />
municipalities as well as local districts. It should be noted that more than<br />
80% <strong>of</strong> the Brazilian population are Catholics and this to some extent<br />
prevents the blacks from being discriminated against. Like most<br />
democratic states, primary <strong>edu</strong>cation in Brazil is not only free but also<br />
compulsory. This factor, among others, makes it possible for over 70<br />
percent <strong>of</strong> the Brazilian population to be literates. The government also<br />
pays attention to other forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation such as adult as well as Nonformal<br />
<strong>edu</strong>cation with the aid <strong>of</strong> radio and television.<br />
3.2.2 Pre-Primary Education<br />
Unlike some African countries, this level <strong>of</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation is for<br />
children ages 2 to 6 years. Pre-Primary schools are being handled by the<br />
private individuals. At this level <strong>of</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation, children have to pay<br />
school fees.<br />
3.2.3 Primary Education<br />
Primary <strong>edu</strong>cation in Brazil is for children aged 7 to 14 years. As<br />
stated earlier, this level <strong>of</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation is not only free but also compulsory<br />
in Brazil. With the 1971 Basic Education Law in the country, pupils in<br />
primary schools are to spend 8 years. This level <strong>of</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation is divided<br />
