within the British common wealth <strong>of</strong> nations became a Republic in 1961<br />

with a former school teacher, Julius Nyerere as the first Executive<br />

president <strong>of</strong> the country. However, in 1964, Zanzibar as well as<br />

Tanganyika became one under a new name, Tanzania.<br />

In Tanzania, by the year 1945, there were about one thousand and<br />

one hundred teacher trainees. These teacher trainees were for only the<br />

primary schools.<br />

3.7.2 Education Curriculum<br />

The curriculum <strong>of</strong> primary school teachers' institution include<br />

among others, national service with an emphasis on military training<br />

and nation building, Ujama political <strong>edu</strong>cation, school organization,<br />

<strong>edu</strong>cational psychology, adult <strong>edu</strong>cation, youth leadership, academic<br />

subjects as well as teaching methodology.<br />

3.7.3 Introduction <strong>of</strong> UPE<br />

In the country, the introduction <strong>of</strong> Universal primary <strong>edu</strong>cation<br />

policy led to an increase in the pupils’ enrolment in the primary schools.<br />

The increase in the enrolment made Tanzania government to r<strong>edu</strong>ce the<br />

training period by one year. In addition, the government organized<br />

workshops and seminars for her teachers in the primary schools in order<br />

to improve the Tanzanian primary <strong>edu</strong>cation standard.<br />

All teacher training institutes in Tanzania contribute to their own<br />

up keep. Each College has a farm which provides the food eaten by the<br />

school community. To some extent, the welfare <strong>of</strong> the teacher trainees<br />

depends on the farm output.<br />

3.7.4 Teacher Education at the Secondary school Level<br />

In <strong>Nigeria</strong>, the Christian Missions did not pay much attention to<br />

the training <strong>of</strong> secondary school teachers. They were mostly concerned<br />

with the training <strong>of</strong> primary school teachers. Any other <strong>edu</strong>cation apart<br />

from primary was superfluous as they only needed interpreters and a<br />

few <strong>Nigeria</strong>ns who could serve them.<br />

However, the establishment <strong>of</strong> the Yaba Higher College in 1932<br />

brought about the introduction <strong>of</strong> the diploma in <strong>edu</strong>cation programme<br />

which took care <strong>of</strong> secondary school teachers.<br />
