school. The middle school teachers should have been trained in the Higher<br />
Teacher College at Kabul (grades 13 and 14).<br />
The Lycee is the equivalent <strong>of</strong> an American High School with grades<br />
10,11 and 12. Its main purpose among others is to prepare students for the<br />
university <strong>edu</strong>cation. By 1966, there are 150,000 in a few hundred<br />
secondary schools in Afghanistan.<br />
The curriculum for middle schools includes: The Koran, theology,<br />
Pushto, Dari, Arabic, Foreign language German, French, Algebra,<br />
geometry, chemistry, physics, biology, history, geography, economics,<br />
drawing and physical <strong>edu</strong>cation. The main emphasis is on mathematics,<br />
science, history, geography and languages.<br />
Also, the curriculum for Lycee includes: the Koran, theology, pushto,<br />
Dari, foreign language, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, geometry,<br />
geography and logic. The main emphasis is on mathematics, natural<br />
sciences, social science and languages.<br />
Like in primary schools, teaching method is memorization and rote<br />
leaning.<br />
3.8.5 Vocational Education in Afghanistan<br />
After completing <strong>edu</strong>cation in the middle school, students who are<br />
interested and qualified may go to the vocational schools in Kabul which<br />
train youths in agriculture, commerce, theology, teaching, secretariat<br />
studies, Arts and Crafts.<br />
In the agricultural Lycee, students are specially trained to develop<br />
agricultural production for the country.<br />
Vocational training is also provided in mechanical and crafts schools,<br />
which begin after primary <strong>edu</strong>cation and continues through grade 10.<br />
These schools train students for mechanical, technical and craft<br />
occupations.<br />
In the Islamic school, grade 10 through 12, students concentrate on<br />
Islamic religion. They are prepared to help in the interpretation <strong>of</strong> the law<br />
in the judicial department <strong>of</strong> the government, teach religion in the schools,<br />
serve as <strong>of</strong>ficials in the mosques or go on to further religious study at the<br />
<strong>University</strong>.<br />
In the same vein, the special schools for training teachers (grades 10<br />
to 12) <strong>of</strong>fer a three-year programme (two years <strong>of</strong> general studies and one<br />
year <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional studies). Due to the increasing demand for primary<br />
