aged 8-12 years or 9-13 years to enable the Local Authorities have a<br />

better reorganization <strong>of</strong> the secondary schools.<br />

3.3.7 Secondary Education<br />

Secondary school in England maybe day or boarding school which<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers to each <strong>of</strong> its scholars, up to and beyond the age <strong>of</strong> 16, a general,<br />

<strong>edu</strong>cation, physical, mental and moral, given through a complete<br />

graded course <strong>of</strong> instruction <strong>of</strong> wider scope and more advanced degree<br />

than that in elementary schools.<br />

About four types <strong>of</strong> secondary <strong>edu</strong>cation can be identified in<br />

England. They are:<br />

(a) Secondary Modern Schools<br />

(b) Secondary Grammar Schools<br />

(c) Technical High School and<br />

(d) Comprehensive School<br />

(a) Secondary Modern Schools are designed for students who are<br />

not academically inclined after their Primary Education.<br />

Secondary Modern Schools cater for secondary <strong>edu</strong>cation for<br />

academically weak students up to the age <strong>of</strong> fifteen (15) years.<br />

(b) Secondary Grammar Schools are designed for the students<br />

who are academically inclined after their primary <strong>edu</strong>cation.<br />

These schools in addition to giving sound formal <strong>edu</strong>cation to<br />

the students, also serve as the Custodian <strong>of</strong> English Tradition.<br />

(c) Technical High Schools are provided for students who have<br />

an intension <strong>of</strong> working in the industry later in life. In other<br />

words, these schools are established to cater for the needs <strong>of</strong><br />

commerce and industry. The products <strong>of</strong> this school are<br />

admitted into the faculties <strong>of</strong> engineering for engineering<br />

courses in the British Universities.<br />

(d) Comprehensive Schools: These schools are established to cater<br />

for children aged 11-18 years. The students in these schools<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer the same subjects up to their second year. At the end <strong>of</strong><br />

their third year, the students will be expected to choose three<br />

subjects apart from English language and Mathematics which<br />
