Also, the university college, Ibadan, which was founded in 1948,<br />

introduced the diploma programme in <strong>edu</strong>cation in 1957/58 academic<br />

year. The <strong>University</strong> in addition to its efforts on teacher training started<br />

a one year associationship course for <strong>Nigeria</strong>n Grade II Teachers in 1961<br />

immediately after dependence.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nigeria</strong>, Nsukka, also in September, 1961,<br />

introduced a degree programme in <strong>edu</strong>cation with about fifty students.<br />

The first set <strong>of</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation students at Nsukka, however, graduated in<br />

June, 1964. The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ibadan introduced degree in <strong>edu</strong>cation in<br />

1963, Ahmadu Bello <strong>University</strong> in 1967. Until 2006 there are over 40<br />

universities in <strong>Nigeria</strong>. Perhaps out <strong>of</strong> all these universities, it is only in<br />

the Universities <strong>of</strong> Agriculture and Technology that degrees in<br />

<strong>edu</strong>cation are not being <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

Holders <strong>of</strong> SSCE or its equivalent spend four years while holders<br />

<strong>of</strong> GCE ‘A' Level or <strong>Nigeria</strong>n Certificate in <strong>edu</strong>cation (NCE) or its<br />

equivalent spend three years for the first degree. Also, Masters degree in<br />

<strong>edu</strong>cation and Doctorate degree in <strong>edu</strong>cation are now available in<br />

almost all the conventional universities.<br />

After independence, Advanced Teachers Colleges were founded<br />

initially by the Federal Government but later, state started establishing<br />

their own Grade I colleges. Such colleges are now (a) Federal<br />

government colleges <strong>of</strong> Education and (b) State colleges <strong>of</strong> Education. A<br />

few ones are also owned by private individuals. Duration in these<br />

Colleges ranges between three to four years depending on the<br />

qualification with which a candidate is admitted.<br />

The candidate with five GCE or equivalent passes spend only three<br />

years. The programme leads to the award <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Nigeria</strong>n Certificate in<br />

Education.<br />

3.7.5 Teacher Education in Tanzania<br />

In Tanzania, teacher <strong>edu</strong>cation for secondary school teachers could<br />

be divided into three groups:<br />

(a) The university <strong>of</strong> Dare Salaam which was established in 1970<br />

and the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, Sokoine which is also a<br />

degree awarding institution <strong>of</strong>fer programmes that can lead to<br />
