(d) Demonstrating to the pupils how to acquire knowledge<br />
as well as learning for themselves.<br />
Primary school in England could be divided into:<br />
(a) Elementary and<br />
(b) Higher elementary schools.<br />
(c) According to statistics, about 93 percent <strong>of</strong> the children within<br />
the age <strong>of</strong> twelve years were in the elementary school.<br />
The Fisher <strong>edu</strong>cation, Act <strong>of</strong> 1918 made primary <strong>edu</strong>cation<br />
compulsory for children up to the age <strong>of</strong> fourteen years and it also<br />
recommended the re-organization <strong>of</strong> primary <strong>edu</strong>cation. Simply,<br />
primary <strong>edu</strong>cation in England can be described as the <strong>edu</strong>cation <strong>of</strong><br />
young children below the age <strong>of</strong> eleven years.<br />
For the purpose <strong>of</strong> administration, all the public primary schools<br />
were being administered by the local <strong>edu</strong>cation Authorities. It was also<br />
the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the Local Education Authorities to control all forms<br />
<strong>of</strong> secular <strong>edu</strong>cation in the privately owned (Voluntary) primary<br />
schools.<br />
Also in England, there are some primary schools called Direct<br />
Grant School. Parents pay school fees in these schools. Primary school<br />
head is always given contract appointment.<br />
Inspectors only visit schools on request. Primary school subjects<br />
include: History, Geography, Nature study, Crafts, Arts and Physical<br />
Education, French, Religious Education. Also, the extra school activities<br />
include: Gynamastic, Swimming, music among others.<br />
The 1944 Act increased the compulsory <strong>edu</strong>cation in England to 15<br />
years. It also recommended that the number <strong>of</strong> pupils in each class<br />
should be r<strong>edu</strong>ced to make it more manageable.<br />
The plowing report <strong>of</strong> 1967 had recommended a change in the age<br />
at which school pupils may transfer from eleven to twelve's years. It was<br />
also recommended that the junior schools were recommended for pupils<br />
