Unit 6: The System <strong>of</strong> Education in Jamaica<br />
1.0 Introduction<br />
Exposing students to the theory and practices <strong>of</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation in<br />
Jamaica will enhance their knowledge about <strong>comparative</strong> <strong>edu</strong>cation.<br />

3.0 The Content<br />
3.6.1 Background<br />
Jamaica, the third largest <strong>of</strong> the Caribbean Island is situated 144<br />
kilometre south <strong>of</strong> Cuba as well as 600 kilometres south <strong>of</strong> Florida. It<br />
became a British colony in 1655. Well over 90 per cent <strong>of</strong> its population is<br />
<strong>of</strong> African origin while the rest came from East Indians, Chinese Syrians,<br />
Lebanese as well as whites. The 1982 census put the Jamaica's<br />
population as 2,190,357. Like other British colonies, English is its <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />
language. It, however, got her independent in 1962.<br />
3.6.2 Introduction <strong>of</strong> Formal Education<br />
The earliest schools in Jamaica were mostly controlled by trustees<br />
who were elected by the voters <strong>of</strong> a parish or by Anglican Clergymen.<br />
However, the establishment <strong>of</strong> Negro Education Grant brought the<br />
<strong>edu</strong>cation administration under the various Christian Missions through<br />
the committee that were set up by their missionary headquarters in<br />
England. It is the responsibility <strong>of</strong> each religious society to supervise its<br />
schools, to provide textbooks and also to recommend appropriate<br />
