warning signal for the passengers to take to the lifeboats<br />

About one hour and a quarter.<br />

Question No. 20. Did the submarine cease firing while<br />

the passengers were being embarked in the lifeboat's ?<br />

No, it did not.<br />

Question No. 21. Did the submarine give any assistance<br />

or make any effort to rescue the passengers and crew<br />

after the ship had been torpedoed ?<br />

No.<br />

Question No. 22. Did the submarine fire upon the lifeboats<br />

after they had left the ship ?<br />

I do not know.<br />

None that I know of.<br />

passengers were taken off ?<br />

I do not know as I was too far to be able to distinguish<br />

if other persons were aboard.<br />

neighborhood ?<br />

No other vessels were in the neighborhood.<br />

Question No. 29. What was the conduct of the crew<br />

during the taking off of the passengers ?<br />

They each cared for themselves.<br />

Last question unnumbered. Do you know of any of the<br />

survivors of the Ancona who can corroborate your<br />

statements ?<br />

In the lifeboat in which I was there were several<br />

countrymen of mine, but I do not know remember their<br />

names.<br />
