Cork (Queenstown), March 18, 1917.<br />

American steamship City of Memphis from Cardiff to<br />

New York sank by German submarine 4 p. m. 17th<br />

instant, 35 miles south of Fastnet. 15 survivors landed<br />

Schull 7 a. m. to-day, 34 additional survivors are on<br />

Admiralty vessel which continues search for 8 missing.<br />

Will land Baltimore probably to-day. I hope report<br />

details this evening. Take affidavit tomorrow. This to<br />

Ambassador, Consul General.<br />

Cork (Queenstown), March 18, 1917.<br />

City of Memphis. 33 survivors landing here now.<br />

Vessel was sunk by gunfire. Submarine large type,<br />

remained on scene after crew left ship. Refused request<br />

to tow boats toward land. Weather not severe, but<br />

threatening. Survivors Schull included Allen Carroll,<br />

second officer; Rank McTherson, second engineer; Robert<br />

Shea, surgeon; John Walkin; Henry Canty; Gussee<br />

Canty; A. D. Henton, all Americans, and five Spaniards,<br />

one Portuguese, one Swede, one Russian. This to<br />

Ambassador, Consul General.<br />

AMERICAN CONSULATE,<br />

Cork (Queenstown), March 18, 1917.<br />

Thirty-three survivors City Memphis do not include<br />

Captain L. P. Borum and four other Americans and four<br />

non-Americans, but indications are that these are safe on<br />

board some merchant or Admiralty vessel which has no<br />

wireless. Captain's boat did not separate from otters<br />

till one a. m. to-day and was picked up empty at 10 a.m.,<br />

weather meanwhile remaining moderate. Vessel cleared<br />

Cardiff 16th in ballast with 58 persons, including 29<br />

Americans, at 3:55 p. m. 17th; submarine fired warning<br />

shot from three miles on starboard quarter. Vessel was<br />

stopped, submarine approaching to one mile fired once<br />

more fragments striking vessel, ship then only being able<br />

read submarine signal to abandon ship. Instantly cap-
