Reports attack on American steamer Petrolite by submarine<br />

flying Austrian flag.<br />

Directs him to obtain statements from officers of American<br />

vessel Petrolite upon its arrival at Copenhagen covering<br />

details of the stopping of Petrolite in Mediterranean by a<br />

submarine.<br />

Transmits copy of statement made by Capt. Thompson,<br />

master of Petrolite, together with an attest of Chief Engineer<br />

W. H. Oorschot, as to amount of damage done<br />

ship, and a questionnaire prepared by Legation and<br />

signed by the captain.<br />

Informs him of statement made by captain of Petrolite,<br />

giving details and locality of attack upon steamer.<br />

Transmits copy with translation of reply from Baron Burian<br />

to his note relative to the shelling of Petrolite and the<br />

requisitioning of food by a submarine flying Austro-<br />

Hungarian flag in the Mediterranean.<br />

States evidence obtained from captain and members of<br />

crew of steamer Petrolite, and from examination made W<br />

vessel this Government is convinced that Austro-<br />

Hungarian Government has obtained incorrect report of<br />

attack on the steamer. States briefly information obtained<br />

from sworn statements of captain and members<br />

of crew.<br />

Transmits copy and translation of note from Imperial and<br />

Royal Minister for Foreign Affairs of July 17, 1916,<br />

stating the Imperial and Royal Government agrees with<br />

the Washington Cabinet that in presentation of the<br />

Petrolite case contradictions occur in several essential<br />

points.<br />

Directs him to ascertain whether statement of commander<br />

of submarine has been received.<br />

States commander of submarine declared under oath that<br />

he confirms former exposition of Petrolite case as correct<br />

in all particulars, and the statements by crew of steamer<br />

deviating therefrom do not conform with the facts.<br />

States it is reported by Consular Agent at Bremerhaven<br />

that vessel Evelyn was sunk by a mine Feb. 20 between<br />

Norderney and the Isle of Borkum.<br />

Reports sinking of steamer Evelyn by mines<br />

States Consular Agent, Bremerhaven, reports Carib sunk<br />

by mine Feb. 22. Three of crew lost.<br />

States that Commander Gherardi has been informed that<br />

vessel Evelyn sank in latitude 53° 52' north, longitude<br />

6° V east.<br />

Informs him that the British Naval Officer who boarded the<br />

Evelyn gave no instructions of any kind to the Master of<br />

that vaaoal<br />

States that the American vessels Evelyn and Carib were<br />

lost in North Sea because, contrary to directions given in<br />

the Nachrichten fur Seefahrer, they ran along the East<br />

Friesian Islands by direction of a British warship.<br />

Reports that statements obtained by Naval Attache 1 Gherardi<br />

from captains of the vessels Evelyn and Carib show<br />

that both vessels were sunk by mines and the British<br />

gave no false directions as reported.<br />

Encloses the reports under oath of captain and officers of<br />

the American steamer Carib.<br />
