came within your observation or hearing that caused<br />

you to form an opinion that the submarine or the crew<br />

of the submarine were of another nationality than that<br />

of the flag displayed ?<br />

Only with Italian and English. The submarine was<br />

too far away to be able to distinguish the crew on board.<br />

Question No. IS. Did the master of the S. S. Ancona,<br />

in your judgment, stop his steamer within a reasonable<br />

length of time after the submarine had given warning, if<br />

warning was given ?<br />

Yes. With the velocity of the Ancona going at full<br />

speed it was in my judgment impossible to stop sooner.<br />

Yes, submarine continued to fire after the Ancona had<br />

hove to.<br />

what, in your judgment, would have been their<br />

fate?<br />

They would have drowned.<br />

Question No. 16. What was the fate of those who remained<br />

They were drowned.<br />

Question No. 17. Did you, personally, seek safety in a<br />

lifeboat?<br />

Yes.<br />

Question No. 18. What would have been your fate<br />

had you not sought refuge in a lifeboat ?<br />

I would have had to swim or take the chance of<br />

drowning.<br />

Question No. 19. How long a time was allowed after<br />

the warning signal for the passengers to take to the lifeboats<br />
