Thelema
Thelema is a small family-owned and
managed wine farm on the southern slopes
of the Simonsberg Mountain, overlooking
the town of Stellenbosch. The 157-hectare
property was originally planted with plum
trees, and upon purchase by the McLean
family trust in 1983, Gyles Webb set out
and replaced the orchards with vineyards.
Today, Thelema is renowned for its
immaculate vineyards, stunning mountain
views, and ‘minty’ Cabernet Sauvignons.
The wine shows complex honeyed notes on
the nose and lots of rich marmalade fruit
flavours and a nice creamy palate. A beautiful
A dense, opaque ruby-plum hue, with a brick
red edge. The nose is slightly closed at present
yet with promises of riches to come: warm
fruit, elegant wood, and lovely refined aromas
of a fine red wine! The palate is dry, firm, yet
silky, with an underlying grip and tannins,
heralding a long life. Notes of bramble fruit
and cigar box add interest – the wine is a workin-progress,
developing slowly all the time!
This wine is a deep green gold colour with
hints of straw yellow. Marzipan and super
ripe star fruit abound on the hedonistic nose.
Nuances of Sauvignon Blanc’s assertive herbal
tinges are ever present but are subdued by the
lush inclusion of waxy, floral notes so typical of
cooler climate Semillon. A sumptuous offering
of warm vanilla spice, crisp and pungent citrus
oil, and delicately toasted almond brioche.
A wine that defines the very essence of the
South African white blend.
