Groot Constantia
In 1685, the birth of the South African wine
industry began in the verdant Constantia
Valley. Groot Constantia, developed by
Simon van der Stel in 1685, is the oldest
wine producing farm in the New World,
boasting a proud heritage of over 327 years
– this makes Groot Constantia’s trademark
one of the oldest surviving trademarks in
the world today. Groot Constantia is one
of the original five participants at the first
Nederburg Auction in 1975. Since then, it
has had an uninterrupted record as a wine
farm and its name is forever linked to the
most famous wines that were first made
in South Africa.
The Constantia Valley has a wonderful cool
climate for producing Pinotage. This wine
has loads of Pinot Noir character – red berry
flavours, strawberries and red cherries, with
a slight earthy character. Smooth texture and
well-rounded wood integration. The wine is
drinkable now and can still keep for a number
of years.
The flagship of the estate. The grapes were
picked at 24 degrees Balling and treated
with special care in the cellar. Matured for
18 months in small new French oak 225-litre
barrels. This wine is a lovely rich plum colour
with an array of fruit aromas, with layers of
blackcurrants, cherries and hints of cigar box.
To preserve the fine quality and complexity,
this wine has not been stabilised or filtered.
It has great maturation potential.
