Monis
Steeped in tradition dating back to 1921,
Monis has the longest established range of
fortified wines in South Africa and enjoys a
reputation of quality for its range of Sherry,
Port and Muscadel. Roberto Moni, who
immigrated from Tuscany to Paarl in 1906,
started an import business trading in olive
oil, cheese and wine, whilst making his
own range of natural and fortified wines.
This proved to be such a success that he
changed the name of his business to Monis
Wineries Enterprise Ltd in 1921. In 1983
and 1984, a limited edition of 1948 Monis
Collectors Port was released, portraying
rare old South African stamps – the single
and double stamp collections – on the
numbered labels. These wines consistently
fetch very high prices on the Nederburg
Auction.

This wine has a tawny colour. It has a very
complex nose with strong muscat, raisins,
fruitcake, cinnamon, marzipan and mandarin
peel. On the palate, it has a soft, smooth,
velvety entry. It is well-balanced with a
delicate muscat and fruitcake taste, with a
slight woodiness in the very long aftertaste
that grows on you. The wine opens up more
flavours with every sip.
