Situated in its own valley on the free draining
north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills,
Hartenberg’s vineyards face north, west
and east. With grape varieties planted
to take advantage of either morning or
afternoon sun, there is a difference in
altitude of some 250 metres between the
northern and southern vineyards. All the
wines are grown, produced and bottled
on the estate. It is located to the north of
Stellenbosch with six varieties planted on
eight soil types.

This classically styled, richly structured wine
has a strong blackcurrant element, but with
some violets and dark chocolate as well. The
cigar box character that the wood provides is
balanced by the rich fruit present in the wine.
Further cellaring will be an advantage. The
wine is named The Mackenzie in recognition of
the family of the late Ken Mackenzie, who was
responsible for the regeneration of Hartenberg
after he purchased the estate in 1986.

One of three Shiraz wines presently made at
the estate, this limited volume wine represents
a vineyard selection of Shiraz from a specific
site that is planted solely on clay – rich, deep,
red soils – on the south-eastern portion of the
estate. The Stork Shiraz honours the late Ken
Mackenzie – pilot, businessman, farmer and
benefactor. ‘Stork’ was Ken’s Second World
War nickname (he was a Spitfire pilot, tall
with long thin legs) and Hartenberg Shiraz
was always his wine of choice.
