6. LOMELINO BOAL SOLERA
1825 – A BOTTLE DONATED

The idea of Solera Madeira came when the
vineyards of the island were ravaged by
mildew in the 1850s. In order to stretch
out the vintage quality wine available, one
tenth of each butt in the ‘solera’ was drawn
off and replaced by wine from the next
vintage, the solera retaining the date of the
original harvest. This ‘refreshing’ occurred
up to 10 times. In the early years of soleras,
of which 1825 was one, the process took
place annually so the youngest wine in
this bottle would be 1834, just before the
Great Trek! Production of such Madeiras
was tiny so it goes without saying that
every bottle of this age opened makes a
rare wine even rarer.
The Boal grape is made into a rich style
of wine, a little less sweet than Malmsey
and often better balanced. Expect from
this wine a greenish tinge, a heady aroma
of toffee and walnuts and a long, complex
finish. Open at least five days before you
plan to drink it and take your time – it will
stay in perfect condition for months.

The flagship red wine of this historical
estate, the Groot Constantia Gouveneurs
Reserve 2005 is a blend of the four classic
Bordeaux varieties, namely Cabernet
Sauvignon (57%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet
Franc (13%), Malbec (5%). This wine, which
was matured for 18 months in small French
oak 225-litre barrels, is a very deep, intense
red colour, with plenty of ripe rich flavours
on the nose including dark chocolate, ripe
plums, hints of cigar box and slightly
charred. The rich flavours follow through
on to the palate, offering good extract with
lots of tannin to ensure good maturation
potential. To preserve the fine quality and
complexity, this wine has not been stabilised
or filtered. Awards include the 2009 Santam
Classic Wine Trophy, 2008 Veritas and 2008
Swiss International Airlines.
