Part A of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Migrati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Profile</str<strong>on</strong>g> aims at setting the scene regarding the<br />
development c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s of the country and explains how migrati<strong>on</strong> has evolved<br />
in recent years. Part B provides an overview of the socio-ec<strong>on</strong>omic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s<br />
of the country (such as demographic changes, the ec<strong>on</strong>omic climate, the labour<br />
market and human capital) in order to understand possible links with migrati<strong>on</strong><br />
patterns in the country. Part C analyses the current migrati<strong>on</strong> situati<strong>on</strong> in the<br />
country and indicates the most recent trends in the numbers and types of<br />
migrants, irregular migrati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>Nigeria</strong>n diaspora living abroad and remittance<br />
inflows. Drawing <strong>on</strong> the informati<strong>on</strong> and data presented, Part D tries to provide<br />
an explanati<strong>on</strong> of the key migrati<strong>on</strong> trends, indicating the main push and pull<br />
factors driving migrati<strong>on</strong> and possible future migrati<strong>on</strong> trends. Part E gives an<br />
overview of the nati<strong>on</strong>al instituti<strong>on</strong>al and policy framework governing migrati<strong>on</strong><br />
(key domestic legislati<strong>on</strong>, instituti<strong>on</strong>al actors, bilateral and multilateral<br />
cooperati<strong>on</strong>, and so <strong>on</strong>) and evaluates the usefulness of migrati<strong>on</strong> policies and<br />
programmes in managing migrati<strong>on</strong>. Part F presents the impacts of migrati<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>on</strong> development and focuses specifically <strong>on</strong> the effectiveness of migrati<strong>on</strong><br />
policies in enhancing the development impact of migrati<strong>on</strong>. Part G c<strong>on</strong>cludes<br />
by summarizing the main findings revealed by the available data <strong>on</strong> current<br />
migrati<strong>on</strong> trends, indicates existing data gaps and possible strategies to improve<br />
migrati<strong>on</strong> statistics, and presents key recommendati<strong>on</strong>s for policymakers in<br />
order to improve current migrati<strong>on</strong> management.<br />
a.1 Development situati<strong>on</strong><br />
In this secti<strong>on</strong>, the development situati<strong>on</strong> in <strong>Nigeria</strong> is analysed based <strong>on</strong><br />
the country’s human development and poverty indicators. Subsequently, links<br />
between the level of development of the country and migrati<strong>on</strong> are inferred.<br />
Millennium Development Goals<br />
The performance level of <strong>Nigeria</strong> in terms of the United Nati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to be attained by 2015, is an indicator<br />
of the country’s progress. As a signatory to the MDGs, <strong>Nigeria</strong> is committed to<br />
achieving the eight MDGs, which are as follows: to eradicate extreme poverty<br />
and hunger; to achieve universal primary educati<strong>on</strong>; to promote gender equality<br />
and empower women; to reduce child mortality; to improve maternal health;<br />
to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; to ensure envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
sustainability; and to develop a global partnership for development. Four of<br />
