Identified skill shortages by sector and professi<strong>on</strong><br />

Another indicator of the adverse effect of the poor and declining quality of<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> are the number and types of identified skill shortages in the country.<br />

According to the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Manpower Board (2004), occupati<strong>on</strong>s that had very<br />

high vacancy rates (of greater than 10%) during 2002 and 2004 included doctors,<br />

agr<strong>on</strong>omists, pharmacists, veterinarians, physicists, statisticians, mechanical<br />

engineers, surveyors, architects, technologists and technicians. These are the<br />

skills needed for health care and development in the country, and any shortages<br />

in this area will hinder development. 12<br />
