In 2005, according to the DRC of the University of Sussex, 751,1 thousand<br />
migrants were living in <strong>Nigeria</strong>. The overall majority of these migrants, 74.1 per<br />
cent of the total, were nati<strong>on</strong>als from neighbouring Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Community of<br />
West African States (ECOWAS) countries (see Figure 5). Immigrants from Benin,<br />
Ghana and Mali represented the most numerous nati<strong>on</strong>alities in <strong>Nigeria</strong>, with<br />
29, 22 and 16 per cent, respectively (DRC, 2007).<br />
Citizens arriving in <strong>Nigeria</strong> from ECOWAS countries also represent a<br />
relevant and increasing percentage of the foreign permanent residents, with<br />
63.4 and 97.5 per cent of the total number in 2001 and 2005, respectively (see<br />
Table 6 below) (ECOWAS, 2006).<br />
