and foreigners, according to the 1991 data. The prominent sectors were clerical<br />
and related work for ECOWAS Member States, while the sectors of producti<strong>on</strong>,<br />
transportati<strong>on</strong> and other related work were prominent for European countries<br />
(NPC, 1991).<br />

Level of income<br />
The available data <strong>on</strong> the level of income of employed pers<strong>on</strong>s is low and<br />
indicative of gender disparity. The estimated earned income for female and male<br />
workers (PPP USD) in 2005 were USD 652 and USD 1,592, respectively (Library<br />
of C<strong>on</strong>gress, 2008).<br />

Statistics <strong>on</strong> the level of educati<strong>on</strong>al attainment, quality of educati<strong>on</strong> and<br />
identified skill shortages are used in gauging the human capital of the country.<br />
This is d<strong>on</strong>e with a view to analysing the likely relati<strong>on</strong>ship between human<br />
capital and migrati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Literacy rate<br />
The adult literacy rate for <strong>Nigeria</strong> is improving and increased from<br />
55.4 per cent in 2002 to 69.1 per cent in 2004. Gender disparity in the literacy<br />
rate at primary school level is dem<strong>on</strong>strated by the values of 78.2 and 60 per cent<br />
for boys and girls, respectively, in 2004. The net enrolment ratio at the primary<br />
