The NBS is currently undergoing reform to ensure that it is able to<br />
produce adequate, high-quality and timely data relevant to the demands<br />
of users in Government, universities and research institutes, private-sector<br />
organizati<strong>on</strong>s and internati<strong>on</strong>al agencies.<br />
Nati<strong>on</strong>al Populati<strong>on</strong> Commissi<strong>on</strong><br />
The Nati<strong>on</strong>al Populati<strong>on</strong> Commissi<strong>on</strong> (NPC) was established by the<br />
Nati<strong>on</strong>al Populati<strong>on</strong> Commissi<strong>on</strong> Act No. 23 of 1988 to periodically collect<br />
nati<strong>on</strong>al populati<strong>on</strong> censuses and sample surveys; promote c<strong>on</strong>tinuous and<br />
universal registrati<strong>on</strong> of births and deaths; and collect, collate and publish data<br />
<strong>on</strong> migrati<strong>on</strong> statistics. The NPC is presently analysing the migrati<strong>on</strong> comp<strong>on</strong>ent<br />
of the 2006 Census. It is also carrying out an internal migrati<strong>on</strong> survey.<br />
Furthermore, it has <strong>on</strong> its agenda the collati<strong>on</strong> and publicati<strong>on</strong> of a backlog of<br />
entry and exit cards from the <strong>Nigeria</strong>n immigrati<strong>on</strong> border posts (land, air and<br />
sea), if the necessary funding is provided.<br />
Nati<strong>on</strong>al Agency for the Prohibiti<strong>on</strong> of Trafficking in Pers<strong>on</strong>s and other Related<br />
Matters<br />
NAPTIP was established <strong>on</strong> 8 August 2003. The Agency was established<br />
through the Trafficking in Pers<strong>on</strong>s (Prohibiti<strong>on</strong>) Law Enforcement and<br />
Administrative Act No. 24 of 2003 as the Government’s resp<strong>on</strong>se to addressing<br />
the scourge of trafficking in pers<strong>on</strong>s in <strong>Nigeria</strong> and the attendant human abuses<br />
in all their forms.<br />
Pursuant to the abovementi<strong>on</strong>ed Trafficking in Pers<strong>on</strong>s (Prohibiti<strong>on</strong>)<br />
Law Enforcement and Administrative Act, as amended in 2005, NAPTIP was<br />
established with the following objectives:<br />
- to coordinate all laws <strong>on</strong> the trafficking in pers<strong>on</strong>s and related offences, and<br />
to enforce those laws;<br />
- to adopt measures to increase the effectiveness of the eradicati<strong>on</strong> of<br />
trafficking in pers<strong>on</strong>s;<br />
- to facilitate procedures when dealing with pers<strong>on</strong>s, including pers<strong>on</strong>s<br />
in custody, who c<strong>on</strong>sent to assist in investigati<strong>on</strong>s or to participate in<br />
proceedings relating to trafficking in pers<strong>on</strong>s and related offences;<br />
- to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement agents to suppress<br />
trafficking in pers<strong>on</strong>s;<br />
