5.3.2 Tourist destinations<br />

City Development Plan for Agra City in the state of Uttar Pradesh under <strong>JNNURM</strong><br />

The city has huge tourism potential due to the<br />

Taj Mahal. The city has numerous monuments<br />

of historical importance that give impetus to the<br />

tourism in the city. The major tourist spots in the<br />

city include Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, forts,<br />

temples, etc. Radha Swami Samadhi, Dayal<br />

Bagh, Ram Bagh, Jama Masjid, Mehtab Bagh,<br />

Itmad-ud-Daulah, Sikandara, Mariyam’s Tomb,<br />

Mankameshwar Mandir, Rawali, Kailash View of The Taj Mahal and its<br />

Mandir, Balkeshwar Mandir, Baptist Church, Sai-ka-Takia are also major attraction spots for<br />

tourists and devotees.<br />

TAJ MAHAL<br />

Taj Mahal one of the seven wonders of the<br />

world is situated on the banks of the<br />

River Yamuna, at the northern end of formal<br />

gardens. The emperor Shah Jahan built this<br />

white marble mausoleum for his queen<br />

Mumtaz Mahal. Its construction started in 1631<br />

and was completed in 1648. Twenty thousand<br />

people were deployed to work on it. The Agra Fort<br />

material was brought in from all over India and central Asia and it took a fleet of 1000<br />

elephants to transport it to the site.<br />

AGRA FORT<br />

Agra Fort is among the World Heritage<br />

Monuments. It is situated on the western bank<br />

of the River Yamuna in Agra and is less than<br />

2 kilometers from the Taj Mahal. The fort is<br />

notable for its smooth blending of Hindu and<br />

central Asian architectural styles.<br />

FATEHPUR SIKRI<br />

Fatehpur Sikri has been declared as the<br />

World Heritage site since 1986. It was built<br />

between 1571 & 1585 and the entire structure<br />

is in red sandstone. It is a beautiful blend of<br />

Indo-Islamic architectural elements. The<br />

sandstone is richly ornamented with carving<br />

and fretwork. Fatehpur Sikri was abandoned<br />

14 years after its creation.<br />

ITIMAD-UD-DAULAH<br />

Located on the left bank of river Yamuna, the<br />

most beautiful building in Agra is the tomb of<br />

Itimad-ud-Daulah after Taj.<br />
