DROUGHTS
408 - H&GAug. 22; ed: 2/3 - The season so far has been an old fashioned
scorcher the Union over, and here the atmosphere continues dry, sultry,
and furnace 1 ike. The drought has been very severe in every quarter
and unprecedented in many portions of the country.
"The failure of the corn and potato is so general as to go far in
keeping up prices of living the coming year." (2)
409 - H&G Sept. 14; ed: 2/2, 3 - We notice by our exchanges that the unparalleled
drought continues in many portions of the country. In the
lake country so ruinous a drought was never experienced. Fall feed is
entirely parched up; meadows and pastures are so dry that fire licks up
the withered grass like tinder.
"The condition of the farming interest in this section is truly de-.,
plorable. and a ride into the country fills the mind with anxious reflections
on the condition of the poor, as that season approaches when
indeed 'All Nature is touched by the finger of Death." (3)
