1885 - H&G July 213; ed:2/2 • Aaron O. Dayton, who was president of the
HJboken bank, a broken concern, is now fourth auditor of the Treasury.
"Michigan might turn out men enough similarly qualified to furnish
the whole Department." (1)
1886 - H&G July 28; ed: 2/2 - "Jackshun Ish De Democrat - Jackshun Ish
De Preshident! - I Wi 11 Wote Again For Jackshun!" vociferated an honest
though uninformed voter in old Stark last fall, as a knockdown rebuff
to a Whig statement of Mr. Van Buren's bad management.
"The man looked to some 'Sir Oracle' of the party for his political
information, who well knew the potency of Jackson's popularity. The
wool was thus adroi tly drawn over his eyes.
"Even in the second year of the retirement of the Old Hero, the Loco
Focos are driven by the unpopularity of his 'illustrious successor' to
clothe the Fox in the Lion's skin, and to use the name of Jackson as a
party catchword." (2)
