CITY GOVERNMENT - Council (Cont'd)
Mr. Case submitted the following:
Resolved, That the appointment. of Printer be postponed, and that
proposals be solicited and handed to the Mayor from the several printing
offices in the city, for performing the printing of the council by
the square. on type of the usual size employed in printing their respective
papers, for the ensuing year; stating in their proposals,
plain printing, and figure work, separately. Agreed to.
Mr. Blair nominated M. H. Hickox for the office of street commissioner,
and Mr. Harrington nominated Warner J. Warner for said office.
Mr. Barnett submitted the following:
Resolved, That the names of Henry H. Dodge and Prentiss Dow be
added to those already cefore the select committee for the appointment
of city clerk. Agreed to.
Mr. Andrews submitted the following:
Resolved, That proposals be received by the Mayor for performing the
duty of city attorney, street commissioner, city clerk and other offices
named in the charter. Laid on the table.
On motion, the council adjourned to meet on Thursday, the 22d inst.,
at 2 o'clock P.M. (verbatim) (11)

Present· The Mayor, Messrs. Andrews, Barnett, Blair. Case, Colaban,
Dockstader, Dodge, Eldridge, Hall, Harrington and Lemen.
Mr. Case from the commi ttee appointed to examine candidates for the
office of Clerk, reported in favor of H. H. Dodge, P. Dow, and J. R.
St. John.
Mr. Andrews moved to lay the report on the table, which motion was
agreed to.
Mr. Hall moved to proceed to the election of City Clerk - carried.
Mr. Andrews nominated A. H. Curtis.
Mr. Hall moved to strike out the name of A. H. Curtis and insert that
of John R. St. John.
Mr. Case moves to amend by dividing the question and taking so much
as related to striking out A. H. Curtis, which amendment was lost.
The question recurring on the election of Mr. Curtis, the ayes and
nays stood as follows:
Ayes - Messrs. Andrews, Blair, Colahan, Dodge, Eldridge and Harrington.
Nays· Messrs. Barnett, Case, Dockstader, Hall and Lemen.
Whereupon the Mayor declared Mr. Curtis duly elected Clerk.
Messrs. Hall and Case appealed from the decision of the Mayor, which
question being taken. the decision was sustained by the Council.
Mr. Harrington offered an ordinance to regulate the duties of City
Attorney, which was read and laid on the table.
A communication was presented from H. B. Payne, City Attorney, containing
an abstract of suits now pending in the supreme court and court
of common pleas of Cuyahoga County, wherein the city of Cleveland is a
party. Laid on the table.
