THEATRE<br />
PROF. RICH LARSEN, Program Director<br />
As a major existing within the English Department, <strong>The</strong>atre <strong>of</strong>fers a broad-based liberal<br />
arts degree for the theatre generalist. <strong>The</strong> <strong>The</strong>atre major prepares the student for further,<br />
more focused training in the theatrical arts through a wide variety <strong>of</strong> courses in performance<br />
arts, technical theatre, design arts, directing, theatre history, playwriting and dramatic literature.<br />
Students may focus their programs <strong>of</strong> study to some degree toward specific interests in<br />
these areas <strong>of</strong> theatre through the use <strong>of</strong> electives within the major.<br />
<strong>The</strong>atre majors are strongly encouraged to complete either a minor (perhaps in English<br />
or Writing) or a second major (perhaps in English). Other combinations are possible.<br />
<strong>The</strong>atre majors are required to participate in <strong>University</strong> Players productions; <strong>The</strong>atre<br />
minors are strongly encouraged to do so. All students with an interest in theatre, whatever<br />
their major, are invited to participate in <strong>University</strong> Players productions. (See also “<strong>The</strong>atre”<br />
under Extracurricular Activities.)<br />
Students majoring in <strong>The</strong>atre are required to take three introductory courses in <strong>The</strong>atre,<br />
Acting, and Technical <strong>The</strong>atre (THTR 110, 111, 112), two <strong>The</strong>atre History courses (THTR<br />
211, 212), Design for the <strong>The</strong>atre (THTR 213), Directing I (THTR 311), and five credits <strong>of</strong><br />
Production Laboratory (THTR 280, 380). Four elective courses in <strong>The</strong>atre round out the<br />
major. Introduction to Drama (ENLT 122), and at least one other course in Dramatic<br />
Literature are required in the student’s cognate area. Courses which would satisfy the<br />
Dramatic Literature requirement include ENLT 211, 220, 295, 340, 341, 345, 355, 461.<br />

(CL)Introduction to <strong>The</strong>atre 3 credits<br />
An introduction to the theories and practices<br />
<strong>of</strong> the theatre arts. Dramatic structure, dramatic<br />
literature, critical writing, acting,<br />
directing, design, practical stagecraft, and<br />
some theatre history will all be touched on<br />
in an effort to introduce students to the<br />
fullness and variety <strong>of</strong> the art <strong>of</strong> theatre.<br />

(CA)Introduction to Acting 3 credits<br />
This first course in a three-course<br />
sequence is intended as an introduction to<br />
the development and training <strong>of</strong> the actor,<br />
covering the fundamental elements <strong>of</strong> the<br />
actor’s craft, including internal and external<br />
technique, character analysis, and<br />
vocal/physical warmups. <strong>The</strong>se elements<br />
will be practically applied in various inclass<br />
exercises and rehearsed performance<br />
work. <strong>The</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> auditions will also be<br />
covered.<br />

Introduction to 4 credits<br />
Technical <strong>The</strong>atre<br />
A study <strong>of</strong> materials, equipment, and techniques<br />
used in the construction and finishing<br />
<strong>of</strong> scenery. Also includes principles <strong>of</strong><br />
lighting and sound and special effects for<br />
the stage. Forty hours <strong>of</strong> lab work in one<br />
<strong>of</strong> the following areas: scenery, costumes,<br />
lighting, or props; and participation on a<br />
crew for a major <strong>University</strong> Players’ production<br />
will be required.<br />

(CA)Creative Drama and 3 credits<br />
Youth <strong>The</strong>atre<br />
An introduction to the history, theory, and<br />
practice <strong>of</strong> both theatre for youth and creative<br />
drama in the United States.<br />
Representative plays will be read and productions<br />
attended and reviewed. <strong>The</strong><br />
course will explore various applications <strong>of</strong><br />
creative drama techniques, including their<br />
use in rehearsal and in the classroom.
