Decision-Making and Uncertainty<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> decision-making as it relates to<br />

scientific and public policy matters. <strong>The</strong><br />

course covers philosophical, mathematical<br />

and psychological aspects <strong>of</strong> decisionmaking<br />

in the face <strong>of</strong> uncertain evidence.<br />

Topics include the nature <strong>of</strong> scientific evidence;<br />

probabilistic evidence and the law;<br />

uncertainty and medicine; and other issues<br />

such as nuclear power, waste disposal, and<br />

strategic nuclear planning. Reading taken<br />

from contemporary sources.<br />

INTD 333 Drs. Dunn, Mathews<br />

<strong>The</strong> Bible in Image and Text 3 credits<br />

This team-taught course is a study <strong>of</strong> the<br />

interpretation <strong>of</strong> major biblical stories and<br />

figures in the Christian theological tradition<br />

and in art history. <strong>The</strong> marriage <strong>of</strong><br />

Christian text and image is a natural and<br />

long-lived one; it provides an exciting<br />

way to integrate knowledge <strong>of</strong> various<br />

major themes such as creation and last<br />

judgement, and <strong>of</strong> many great biblical figures,<br />

such as Moses and Christ. Students<br />

will learn to read the images and visualize<br />

the text.<br />

Science and Society 3 credits<br />

This course attempts to show how the sciences,<br />

particularly the behavioral sciences,<br />

impact both positively and negatively on<br />

society. Issues dealt with include the<br />

nature <strong>of</strong> science, similarities and differences<br />

between the scientific disciplines,<br />

the impact <strong>of</strong> science on the concept <strong>of</strong><br />

free will, and the philosophical and moral<br />

implications <strong>of</strong> psychological testing,<br />

socio-biology, and Skinnerian radical<br />

behaviorism.<br />

NSCI 201 Dr. Carey<br />

(E)Science and the 3 credits<br />

Human Environment A brief study <strong>of</strong><br />

the effects <strong>of</strong> technological, scientific and<br />

industrial progress on the air, land, and<br />

water resources <strong>of</strong> the human environment.<br />

Problems in each <strong>of</strong> the resource<br />

areas will be discussed in detail.<br />

*Interdisciplinary courses are team-taught courses which vary from semester to semester.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y may be used to fulfill appropriate General Education requirements as specified in the<br />

course-schedule bulletin.
