UPSILON PI EPSILON<br />

National Computer Science Honor Society. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Gamma chapter<br />

was chartered in the spring <strong>of</strong> 1985.<br />

SIGMA THETA TAU*<br />

International Honor Society <strong>of</strong> Nursing was founded in 1922 and is a prestigious organization<br />

<strong>of</strong> nurse leaders, scholars and researchers. Requirements: completion <strong>of</strong> one half<br />

<strong>of</strong> the curriculum, demonstrated ability in nursing, a grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 3.0 and rank in<br />

the upper one-third <strong>of</strong> the class. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Iota Omega Chapter was chartered in<br />

April, 1988.<br />

KAPPA DELTA PI<br />

<strong>The</strong> International Honor Society for education established in 1911, the Sigma Chi<br />

chapter was installed here at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> in 1992. It joins over 500 chapters<br />

from around the world in dedication to the ideals <strong>of</strong> fidelity in Humanity, Science and<br />

Service, and Toil.<br />

BETA BETA BETA<br />

National Honor Society for biology founded in 1922. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s chapter, established<br />

in 1994, is one <strong>of</strong> 372 chapters nationwide. <strong>The</strong> society encourages undergraduate<br />

biological research through presentations at conventions, publication in the journal BIOS,<br />

and research/travel grants. All undergraduate students interested in biology may join as<br />

associate members. A regular member must be a junior or senior with 3.0 grade-point average<br />

in at least three biology courses (one upper level) and in good academic standing at the university.<br />

SIGMA PHI OMEGA<br />

<strong>The</strong> National Honor Society in gerontology. Founded in 1980, its purpose is to recognize<br />

those students who excel in gerontology as well as pr<strong>of</strong>essional aging-service personnel.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Gamma Epsilon chapter was established in April, 1997. Membership is<br />

open to students who have at least eighteen credits completed in gerontology/aging studies<br />

with a grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 3.3.<br />

BETA GAMMA SIGMA*<br />

Beta Gamma Sigma is the only business honor society recognized by the AACSB, the<br />

International Association for Management Education. Basic requirements: ranking in the<br />

top 10% <strong>of</strong> the class with a major in business and management programs. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

chapter <strong>of</strong> Beta Gamma Sigma was chartered in spring, 1997.<br />

LAMBDA PI ETA<br />

<strong>The</strong> National Honor Society for Communication majors founded in 1985 to honor and<br />

encourage high levels <strong>of</strong> scholarship and leadership in the field <strong>of</strong> Communications. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> chapter was installed in 1999. Membership requires junior-level status, at least<br />

12 credits and a grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.25 in communication studies, and a cumulative<br />

grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.0.<br />

ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA<br />

<strong>The</strong> National Honor Society <strong>of</strong> Freshmen, Alpha Lambda Delta was founded in 1924<br />

to honor eccellent academic achievement by students in the first year <strong>of</strong> study. <strong>The</strong> Richard<br />

H. Passon Chapter <strong>of</strong> the Society was installed at the <strong>University</strong> on March 24, 2001.<br />

Membership requires enrollment as a full-time student in a degree program, and a grade<br />

point average <strong>of</strong> 3.5 or above at the end <strong>of</strong> the first semester <strong>of</strong> the freshman year.<br />
