ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES<br />

HARRY AND JEANETTE WEINBERG MEMORIAL LIBRARY<br />

Opened in 1992, this 80,000-square-foot, five-story building is named for Harry and<br />

Jeanette Weinberg. Library holdings include 432,039 volumes, 1,928 print periodical subscriptions,<br />

over 9,150 full-text electronic journals, and 493,710 micr<strong>of</strong>orm pieces. <strong>The</strong> facility<br />

includes group-study rooms; quiet study areas; a twenty-four-hour study room with computer<br />

lab; and the Heritage Room, a large reading room on the fifth floor overlooking the campus<br />

and community. <strong>The</strong>re is a Java City C<strong>of</strong>fee Bar in the Pro Deo Room. Over 104 databases are<br />

available on the World Wide Web. Among the Library’s fulltext online resources are Lexis-<br />

Nexis, ProQuest, Project Muse, IDEAL, Annual Reviews, JSTOR, Emerald Library, Global<br />

Access, Newsbank, OED, Past Masters, Contemporary Women’s Issues, ECO and<br />

FirstSearch. A proxy server gives users remote access to these databases. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Archives and Special Collections houses <strong>University</strong> historical records, rare books, faculty publications,<br />

and other special collections. <strong>The</strong> Media Resources Collection, located on the first<br />

floor, holds 13,085 non-print items, including videocassettes, records, films and filmstrips. In<br />

addition to the Library’s own Online Public Catalog, users can search NPLN, Northeast<br />

Pennsylvania Library Network virtual catalog <strong>of</strong> local libraries, Jesuit libraries and PALCI,<br />

Pennsylvania academic libraries who participate in a direct borrowing program. With PALCI<br />

members, the Library also shares 1900 fulltext books that users can read or borrow online.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are 80 Internet workstations in the Library, including 33 machines available 24 hours a<br />

day, seven days a week in the Pro Deo Room and ten laptops that are available at the circulation<br />

desk. Throughout the building, wireless connection to the internet is available for laptops.<br />

In addition to these machines, students may use ResNet ports to plug personal laptops into the<br />

network in the first floor Pro Deo Room and group study rooms.<br />

Library hours are posted on campus, on the Internet, and on a recording which can be<br />

heard at 941-7525. It is open 99.5 hours per week, with extended hours during exam<br />

(www.scranton.edu). Some required readings for courses are available through ERES, an<br />

electronic reserve reading database over the Internet. <strong>The</strong> Library conducts an extensive<br />

user-education program to orient and instruct students in resources and research techniques.<br />

THE CAS ACADEMIC ADVISING CENTER<br />

<strong>The</strong> Academic Advising Center, located in St. Thomas Hall 309, serves all freshmen in <strong>The</strong><br />

College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences. Staffed by pr<strong>of</strong>essional advisors and by faculty advisors from a<br />

wide variety <strong>of</strong> disciplines, the Academic Advising Center <strong>of</strong>fers a comprehensive program <strong>of</strong><br />

academic advising throughout the freshman year. In addition to individual advising, the Academic<br />

Advising Center also <strong>of</strong>fers specialized Freshman Seminars for students in the CAS common curriculum.<br />

Faculty advisors are available to students from 8:30-4:30 Monday through Friday.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y provide assistance with orientation, pre-registration, drop-add, general-education course<br />

selection, declaration and change <strong>of</strong> major, and assessment <strong>of</strong> academic performance and goals.<br />

THE CPS ACADEMIC ADVISING CENTER<br />

<strong>The</strong> Academic Advising Center, located on the first floor <strong>of</strong> McGurrin Hall, serves all<br />

students in <strong>The</strong> Panuska College. Staff are available, during the academic year, Monday<br />

through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to provide individual assistance with academic<br />

advising, registration, assessment <strong>of</strong> academic performance and career goals. <strong>The</strong> Center<br />

also works closely with other campus resources to provide comprehensive advisement<br />

opportunities. Faculty mentors are available to students within their academic departments.<br />
