FULBRIGHT AND OTHER<br />

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS<br />

Over the last 31 years, 109 <strong>Scranton</strong> students have accepted grants in the competitions<br />

administered by the Institute <strong>of</strong> International Education (Fulbright) and International Rotary.<br />

In 2001 the <strong>University</strong> celebrated its 100th. winner in the competition for prestigious<br />

Fulbright Fellowships—the U.S. Government’s premier scholarship for foreign study and<br />

research.<br />

To date, one <strong>Scranton</strong> student has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for the <strong>2002</strong>-<br />

<strong>2003</strong> academic year, and one has been awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship.<br />

Nicole Negowetti, a political science major, will pursue a Master’s degree in Peace and<br />

Conflict Resolution at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Limerick in Ireland on her Rotary Scholarship.<br />

Kristy Petty, an international business and Spanish double major, will examine the impact <strong>of</strong><br />

Mercosur on the strategies <strong>of</strong> leading firms in Argentina’s automobile and foodstuffs industries<br />

during her Fulbright Fellowship in Buenos Aires.<br />

Seven <strong>Scranton</strong> students spent the 2001-<strong>2002</strong> academic year overseas on prestigious<br />

postgraduate fellowships. Maria Atzert spent the year teaching English as a second language<br />

as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant in South Korea. Lisa Biagiotti was a Fulbright<br />

Fellow in Italian history at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Rome. Erin Friel taught English and American<br />

studies at a high school in Germany on her Fulbright Teaching Assistantship. Carol<br />

Gleeson examined the interactions <strong>of</strong> bat species in the forests <strong>of</strong> Paraguay during her<br />

Fulbright Fellowship. Nicole Heron spent the year at the Turku School <strong>of</strong> Economics and<br />

Business while a Fulbright Fellow in Finland. Sean St.Ledger studied in Padua , Italy on his<br />

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship. Finally, Clifford McMurray spent his Fulbright year<br />

studying international business at the Hochschule Bremmen in Germany.<br />

Dr. Susan Trussler <strong>of</strong> the Economics/Finance department is the <strong>University</strong>’s Fulbright<br />

Program Adviser.<br />
