THE AMELIA SURACI SCHOLARSHIP—This scholarship was established in 1977 by the late Mr.<br />

Frank Suraci, chairman <strong>of</strong> Parodi Cigar Corporation, to honor his wife, Amelia. After Mr. Suraci’s<br />

death, contributions from the Suraci and Keating families were added to the endowment. Each year, the<br />

scholarship benefits deserving and needy students.<br />

THE ROBERT J. AND JOAN J. SYLVESTER SCHOLARSHIP—Arthur J. and Angela V. Kania<br />

established this scholarship to honor Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester. Mr. Sylvester retired in 2001 after serving<br />

18 years as the <strong>University</strong>’s vice president for institutional advancement. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is for students<br />

from Lackawanna County with first consideration to graduates <strong>of</strong> Abington Heights, <strong>Scranton</strong><br />

Preparatory, and Valley View high schools.<br />

THE TRL ASSOCIATES SCHOLARSHIP—This scholarship was established by Stephen P.<br />

Hrobuchak, Jr., President <strong>of</strong> TRL, Inc., to benefit TRL employees and their children.<br />

THE UNICO SCHOLARSHIP—<strong>The</strong> UNICO Foundation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Scranton</strong> Chapter <strong>of</strong> UNICO National, a<br />

philanthropic group, established this scholarship in 1980 to <strong>of</strong>fer financial assistance to deserving students.<br />

THE UNITED GILSONITE LABORATORIES SCHOLARSHIP––This scholarship, established in<br />

1999, is available to U-G-L employees and their families.<br />

THE UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON ALUMNI SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP––This scholarship,<br />

established through contributions by the Alumni Society, is available to children and grandchildren <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> alumni and alumnae.<br />

THE CHARLES J. VOLPE SCHOLARSHIP AND LECTURE FUND—Established in 1988 in<br />

memory <strong>of</strong> Charles J. Volpe, a well-respected <strong>Scranton</strong> businessman and public servant, the scholarship<br />

provides assistance for a student entering the senior year who is majoring in political science. <strong>The</strong><br />

Lecture Fund provides for an annual lecture featuring a well-known public servant.<br />

THE MARY AND PATRICK VOLPE SCHOLARSHIP—Angela V. Kania established this scholarship,<br />

for graduates <strong>of</strong> Old Forge High School enrolled in <strong>The</strong> Kania School <strong>of</strong> Management, in honor <strong>of</strong><br />

her parents.<br />

THE PAUL L. WALEFF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP—This scholarship was established by the<br />

parents <strong>of</strong> Paul L. Waleff, who died in 1984 while a student at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>. <strong>The</strong> scholarship<br />

is presented to a junior or senior who plans a career <strong>of</strong> service to persons with disabilities.<br />

THE THOMAS P. WHITE SCHOLARSHIP—Mrs. Ilene White established this scholarship to<br />

honor the memory <strong>of</strong> her husband, Thomas. It is awarded to an education major who is a “non-traditional”<br />

student, such as a transfer student or an individual returning to school after an absence.<br />

THE WILLIAM ZAHLER SCHOLARSHIP—In 1986, Mr. and Mrs. William P. Zahler <strong>of</strong> Mayfield<br />

Heights, Ohio, established a scholarship in memory <strong>of</strong> their son William Zahler, Jr., an associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

English at the <strong>University</strong>. Income from the scholarship is distributed to deserving young men and women.<br />

ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS<br />

THE AVENTIS PASTEUR SCHOLARSHIP—Each year, two graduate students who have demonstrated<br />

excellence in the field <strong>of</strong> biology and who are pursuing biochemistry master’s degrees are selected<br />

for summer internships at Aventis Pasteur’s Swiftwater, Pennsylvania, location.<br />

THE RITA AND BERNARD BAGLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP—Established in 1990 by<br />

the children <strong>of</strong> Mr. and Mrs. Bagley, this scholarship is available to residents <strong>of</strong> Sullivan County,<br />

Pennsylvania, with preference to parishioners <strong>of</strong> St. Basil’s Church in Dushore.<br />

THE DR. A.J. CAWLEY SCHOLARSHIP—In memory <strong>of</strong> Dr. A.J. Cawley <strong>of</strong> Pittston,<br />

Pennsylvania, a scholarship was established by a legacy from his sister, Miss Ellen Cawley. A scholarship<br />

is given each year to a student majoring in electrical engineering.<br />

THE LEN AND DEBORAH GOUGEON ST. ANN’S SCHOLARSHIP—Established in 1986<br />

through a gift from Drs. Len and Deborah Gougeon, this scholarship, based on need, provides assistance<br />

to a graduate <strong>of</strong> St. Ann’s Elementary School or a member <strong>of</strong> St. Ann’s Monastery Parish in <strong>Scranton</strong><br />
