There would be very serious problems in handling traffic during construction. A study of possible
improvements to this bridge would be of value. Such a study should be added to MoDOT’s list in
the Council’s update of the Long Range Plan.
I-70 across St. Charles County should be a high priority for MoDOT to update and improve it’s ITS
process. This would include the use of additional technologies from their traffic control center
including optical and other traffic monitoring mechanisms, variable message sign boards, roadside
call boxes, lane control signs, motorist assist vehicles, and communications with all emergency
response agencies.
Rt. 364 does not present any congestion problems and could easily handle additional traffic.
Completing the section from Mid Rivers Mall Dr. to the I-64/Rt. N interchange should be completed
as soon as possible. This will greatly help travel on I-64 and could decrease some travel on I-70 and
allow other roads to operate more safely and with less congestion. Its completion would also help
improve air quality in the region.
Rt. 370 does not present any serious congestion problems. However, because it is a major freeway
connecting two interstate routes, additional ITS improvements should be made to the road to insure
that it continues to operate with the greatest efficiency. In the future a number of such ITS
improvements like those described above should be implemented.
B-1.2. Expressways
U.S. 61 MoDOT plans improvements to this route that should adequately handle future volumes.
They are included in the Legacy 2030 Illustrative list for improving the road to freeway standards.
B-1.3. Principal Arterials
Rt. 79 will need attention in the section from Rt. M to north of I-70. Widening to four lanes divided
is suggested and would not be an expensive improvement or create any negative environmental
problems. This will greatly improve traffic operations and its safety. The road is listed for a
corridor study in Legacy 2030 north to Lincoln County.
Rt. 94
From I-70 to N. Rt. 364, this road will require ITS improvements. Some intersection improvements
may be possible with additional turn lanes, but the only other practical improvements would be to
optimize the signal operations. MoDOT should undertake such a study to determine hardware that
may be available in the future to assist in this area.
The section of Rt. 94 from Mid Rivers Mall Dr. to I-64 will require capacity expansion. An
additional lane in each direction should handle future traffic and improve the roads’ safety. Such
an improvement should not be very expensive or create any severe inconvenience to traffic since
the median has the room for this type improvement. There would be no negative environmental
effects and it would enhance air quality in the region.
Rt. K will require the special corridor study defined in Legacy 2030 to determine adjustments to
traffic operations and other improvements that would better handle future traffic. The cost of this
