# The next five largest state truck populations were Illinois (6.24%), Texas (5.5%), Ohio<br />

(4.38%), Florida (4.04%), <strong>and</strong> Pennsylvania (3.81%). These states account <strong>for</strong> one-quarter<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total fleet.<br />

CHANGES BETWEEN 1992 AND 1997<br />

# Nationwide, <strong>the</strong> total truck fleet increased in size by 6% between 1992 <strong>and</strong> 1997.<br />

# Regionally, <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Gulf region experienced <strong>the</strong> most growth in <strong>the</strong>ir truck population<br />

(+27%). The North Central region (+13%), North East region (+3%), Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Atlantic<br />

(+1%) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> West (+12%). No regions experienced a decrease in truck population, as<br />

was evident between 1987 <strong>and</strong> 1992.<br />

# For <strong>the</strong> States,<br />

- Cali<strong>for</strong>nia's share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total truck fleet has decreased slightly (-1%) between 1992 <strong>and</strong><br />

1997 in contrast to a growth <strong>of</strong> over 9% between 1987 <strong>and</strong> 1992.<br />

3.3 Size <strong>and</strong> Make-up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 4-Axles or Less Fleet<br />

The 1997 “4-axles or less” truck fleet, which is a subsection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total truck fleet, is briefly<br />

discussed in this section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> report as supported in Table 3.2-1 <strong>and</strong> in Appendix A. Note that<br />

this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fleet is not <strong>the</strong> emphasis <strong>of</strong> this report. It is worth noting that over two-thirds <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> total national truck fleet (67%) were single-unit straight trucks. This included 2-axle 6-tire<br />

straight trucks, 3-axle <strong>and</strong> 4-axle straight trucks. Making <strong>the</strong> 4-axle or less vehicles <strong>the</strong> largest<br />

portion <strong>of</strong> commercial truck fleet.<br />
