completely co-ossified with the skull, a wider metataisal tubercle,<br />
larger eye, wider skull (Taylor, 1938:508), fewer large creamcolored<br />
blotches (Davis <strong>and</strong> Dixon, 1957b: 145), <strong>and</strong> the absence<br />
<strong>of</strong> vaguely outlined paravertebral light lines (Smith <strong>and</strong> S<strong>and</strong>ers,<br />
1952:209). Based on an examination <strong>of</strong> 101 specimens from <strong>Sinaloa</strong>,<br />
Tamaulipas, <strong>and</strong> Texas, no consistent differences warranting subspecific<br />
designation <strong>of</strong> the population in western <strong>Mexico</strong> were<br />
observed.<br />
Spadefoot toads were collected at night on the road or at temporary<br />
ponds throughout the lowl<strong>and</strong>s. Breeding commences with<br />
the first heavy rains <strong>and</strong> continues through September. Calling<br />
males were collected in the first week <strong>of</strong> July <strong>and</strong> amplexing pairs<br />
were secured at La Cruz on August 18 <strong>and</strong> 20. All calling males<br />
were floating in the water,<br />
