Chrysemys scripta hiltoni (Can)<br />

Pseudemys scripta hiltoni Carr, Amer. Mus. Novitates, 1181:1, Figs. 1-3,<br />

July 30, 1942 (type locality, Guirocoba, 28 miles southeast <strong>of</strong> Alamos,<br />

1485 feet, Sonora).<br />

Chrysemys scripta [hiltoni]: McDowell, Proc. Zool, Soc. London, 143:274,<br />

September 1964.<br />

Remarks.—Ten specimens obtained from the Rio Fuerte <strong>and</strong><br />

nearby lagoons in northern <strong>Sinaloa</strong>, 5-7 March, 1961, are typical<br />

hiltoni. <strong>The</strong>ir measurements are: carapace length 125-295 (180),<br />

carapace width 100-215 (130), <strong>and</strong> shell depth 45-150 (70). <strong>The</strong><br />

series includes two males. Marginal black spots are distinct on all<br />

specimens.<br />

Distribution in <strong>Sinaloa</strong>.—Probably occurs throughout the Rio<br />

Fuerte drainage system. See Fig. 36.<br />

Specimens examined.—4.8 km. NE San Miguel, Rio del Fuerte, 90 m.<br />

(•KU 63600-09).<br />

Chrysemys scripta ornata (Cray)<br />

<strong>Sinaloa</strong>).<br />

Remarks.—Three specimens from southern <strong>Sinaloa</strong> are typical<br />

ornata, with no indication <strong>of</strong> black smudge-like marks on the marginals<br />

that are characteristic <strong>of</strong> hiltoni. Measurements <strong>of</strong> an adult<br />

male, female, <strong>and</strong> juvenile are respectively: carapace length 151,<br />

300, 34; carapace width 120, 235, 31; shell depth 54, 120, 18. intergradation<br />

between ornata <strong>and</strong> hiltoni may occur in north-central<br />

<strong>Sinaloa</strong>.
