A growing number of trade associations and business networks are issuing<br />

environmental per<strong>for</strong>mance guidelines <strong>for</strong> members, preparing educational<br />

materials on environmental and social issues, and holding seminars on timely<br />

Business <strong>for</strong> Social Responsibility (BSR), founded in 1992 in Washington, D.C.,<br />

focuses on human resource issues, environmental per<strong>for</strong>mance, community<br />

relations, and resolving international problems. Its 850 members and affiliated<br />

companies pay from $150 to $5,000 a year to belong and to receive advice on<br />

improving their social, environmental, and financial per<strong>for</strong>mance. A book,<br />

Beyond the Bottom Line: Putting Social Responsibility to Work <strong>for</strong> Your Business and<br />

the World, and a booklet documenting Environmental Practices of Member<br />

C o m p a n i e s w e re published in Fa l l , 1 9 9 4 . Assessing member initiatives,<br />

implementation strategies, and effects on the company and community is an<br />

ongoing ef<strong>for</strong>t designed to enlighten and educate other BSR members, a<br />

broader business audience, and public policy makers. A series of national<br />

workshops on eco-efficiency will be launched by the BSR Education Fund in<br />

January 1995. As of September 1994, BSR chapters had been <strong>for</strong>med in 24<br />

regions across the United States.<br />
