A duplex pressure gauge is provided in the driving cab to indicate to the Driver the<br />

pressure in the main reservoir and brake pipes. Another duplex gauge indicate to him the pressure<br />

in the cylinders <strong>of</strong> the two leading bogies.<br />

Isolating cocks are provided to isolate a defective brake unit from the MR and brake<br />

pipes and also to isolate brake cylinders in the individual bogies.<br />

The brake cylinders are equipped with automatic slack adjusters to take up the slack in<br />

the brake rigging with wear <strong>of</strong> brake blocks, thus ensuring fairly constant piston stroke and<br />

obviating the need for manual adjustment <strong>of</strong> the brake rigging between visits <strong>of</strong> the units to the<br />

shed. This is an essential feature <strong>of</strong> brake equipment for suburban services, when brake block<br />

wear is quite high on account <strong>of</strong> frequent application <strong>of</strong> brakes.<br />

The know system is quite similar to the system described above. In this system,<br />

however, the automatic brakes become operative automatically on failure <strong>of</strong> the EP brakes. With<br />

this arrangement the brake controller has only three positions viz. release, full service<br />

application and emergency.
