<strong>Historic</strong> Significance: This building is significant because it is one <strong>of</strong><br />
42 Craftsman· buildings in the survey area which demonstrates <strong>Juneau</strong>'s<br />
vernacular interpretation <strong>of</strong> national styles, because <strong>of</strong> its<br />
association with mining engineer, H.P. Crowther <strong>and</strong> because it<br />
demonstrates patterns <strong>of</strong> community development in <strong>Juneau</strong>, Alaska.<br />
The earliest known owner is Crowther who was a mining engineer <strong>and</strong><br />
surveyor. Later, the house was occupied by John Newmarker who worked<br />
for the custom's <strong>of</strong>fice. He was also a marine engineer <strong>and</strong> was<br />
appointed Inspector <strong>of</strong> Boilers for the Department <strong>of</strong> Commerce in the<br />
1920's.<br />
