<strong>of</strong> the neighborhood, excellent condition<br />

<strong>Historic</strong> Signi:ficance: This building is significant because it is the<br />

only example <strong>of</strong> Queen Anne architecture in the survey ar-ea <strong>and</strong> it<br />

demonstrates <strong>Juneau</strong>'s vernacular interpretation <strong>of</strong> national styles,<br />

because <strong>of</strong> its association with mine owner, Fred Nowell, <strong>and</strong> because<br />

it demonstrates patterns <strong>of</strong> community development in<strong>Juneau</strong>,Alaska.<br />

The home was constructed for Fred Nowell who was part owner <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Berners Bay Mining <strong>and</strong> Milling Company. Nowell was also one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

incorporators <strong>of</strong> the Alaska Improvement Company that leased mining<br />

claims in Sheep Creek Valley. Another resident was Herman T. Tripp<br />

who was also a miner.<br />
