some <strong>of</strong> the mining growth took place prior to 1921, however, this was the peak production<br />

period <strong>of</strong> the Alaska <strong>Juneau</strong> gold Mining Company which probably had the most influence on<br />

<strong>Juneau</strong>'s development <strong>of</strong> all the local mines. Thirty homes were constructed in the<br />

neighborhood during this period.<br />

With 75 properties judged to have maintained their physical integrity from the period <strong>of</strong> historic<br />

significance, <strong>and</strong> only 21 which have not, a more than sufficient number <strong>of</strong> properties exist<br />

which illustrate the historic themes <strong>and</strong>, in addition, the integrity <strong>of</strong> the neighborhood is not<br />

compromised by the properties which have been altered.<br />

The survey area <strong>of</strong> Chicken Ridge explains the themes <strong>of</strong> community development <strong>and</strong><br />

vernacularinterpretations <strong>of</strong>national architectural trends. The neighborhood surveyed represents<br />

a unique <strong>and</strong> recognizable district whose history <strong>and</strong> physical<br />

characteristics are represented in its individual properties. The basic elements necessary for<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> National Register forms for the Chicken Ridge District exist in this document.<br />

Where From Here?<br />

In May <strong>of</strong> 1992 the <strong>City</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Borough</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Juneau</strong> received a Certified Local Government Grant<br />

to write a nomination to the National Register <strong>of</strong> <strong>Historic</strong> Places for the Chicken Ridge <strong>Historic</strong><br />

District.<br />
