The Second <strong>Scroll</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Short Version <strong>of</strong> the Sutra <strong>of</strong><br />
the Original Life <strong>of</strong> the Bodhisattva Guanshiyin<br />
Now,<br />
(The members <strong>of</strong> the congregation, arriving at this point, respectfully<br />
st<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> remain st<strong>and</strong>ing as they listen. The leader leaves his seat<br />
<strong>and</strong>, kneeling, reads out the sacrificial prayer.)<br />
In the thirty-sixth year, a jiashen year, <strong>of</strong> the reign-period Marvelous<br />
Splendor <strong>of</strong> Raised Forest, on the fifteenth day following the first<br />
day <strong>of</strong> the seventh month, a yisi day, we, imperial relatives <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>ficials, respectfully have prepared the ritual pure wine <strong>and</strong> the<br />
appropriate fine foods, <strong>and</strong> make bold to <strong>of</strong>fer sacrifice to HER<br />
HIGHNESS MARVELOUS GOODNESS while she is still alive. As<br />
our thoughts go out to <strong>Her</strong> Highness, tears <strong>of</strong> pain course down. Because<br />
<strong>of</strong> the measure <strong>of</strong> her Being she swallows emptiness; on her<br />
mind <strong>of</strong> No-being the moon is imprinted. <strong>Her</strong> behavior surpasses<br />
past <strong>and</strong> present; her merit transcends the Great Vacuity. As stars<br />
move <strong>and</strong> the Dipper turns, the creatures are exchanged <strong>and</strong> people<br />
fly <strong>of</strong>f. In order to achieve No-birth, she disobeys her father. Right<br />
in the middle <strong>of</strong> her greening spring, the blooming flower encounters<br />
a storm. The incense burns but its smoke refuses to rise; the<br />
c<strong>and</strong>le is bright but its light is hidden. Forced to depart from<br />
the golden palace, she is coerced to go to the Yellow Springs. 1<br />
<strong>Her</strong> life fades faster than the western sunlight; her body will decompose<br />
like the morning dew. We, her servants, have no other means<br />
<strong>of</strong> showing our respect but to give expression to our unworthy feelings.<br />
As we send her <strong>of</strong>f on her journey through the clouds, may she<br />
