Turn around <strong>and</strong> you promptly ascend the shore <strong>of</strong> bodhi,<br />
No fear there for the iron-faced devils <strong>of</strong> the Underworld!<br />

The bodhisattva Kṡitigarbha rose up into the sky <strong>and</strong> left,<br />
Followed by the nuns, carried by clouds under their feet.<br />
The princess at this time experienced an increased zeal,<br />
And with the youth <strong>and</strong> maiden continued traveling on.<br />
The world <strong>of</strong> the hells had become a realm <strong>of</strong> free roaming,<br />
And the earth-prisons had become palaces <strong>of</strong> pleasure.<br />
The heads <strong>of</strong> the eighteen hells came out to welcome her,<br />
The judicial <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> the Three Offices all received her.<br />
When the princess walked on <strong>and</strong> came upon a bridge,<br />
Golden bells <strong>and</strong> jade chimes all resounded together.<br />
There by the bridge, Grannie Meng <strong>of</strong>fered tea <strong>and</strong> fruits, 19<br />
And with three cups <strong>of</strong> tea, her spirits grew even higher.<br />
From the river below the bridge, the sinners cried out—<br />
‘‘From what county <strong>and</strong> what village do those people come?’’<br />
The guardian <strong>of</strong> the bridge bowed to her <strong>and</strong> replied:<br />
‘‘These are all people from the world <strong>of</strong> light who sinned.<br />
Being rich <strong>and</strong> noble, they thought they would live forever,<br />
And so with fiendish deception, they harmed good people.<br />
During their lifetimes, they did not do anything good,<br />
And now it’s too late for remorse as they must suffer.<br />
When they died, they had no meritorious deeds to help them,<br />
And still aren’t allowed to come before the Lord <strong>of</strong> Shade.’’<br />
When the princess had ascended the bridge <strong>and</strong> looked all around<br />
her, she one moment heard weeping <strong>and</strong> crying, <strong>and</strong> the next moment<br />
heard sweet music. She then asked the youth <strong>and</strong> maiden:<br />
‘‘What’s the cause <strong>of</strong> this weeping <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> this music?’’ The boy <strong>and</strong><br />
girl replied: ‘‘That music is the music from the halls <strong>of</strong> the Ten<br />
Kings. That weeping is the weeping from below the bridge across<br />
the Alas River.’’ When the princess had been told this, she leaned<br />
with her jade-white h<strong>and</strong>s on the bridge’s balustrade, <strong>and</strong> with her<br />
kind eyes observed the situation below the bridge. She indeed saw a
